What is the point of brown sugar in a Thai Red Curry recipe? - thai red curry recipe

Red Curry made some last night, and the recipe asks me to add 1-2 tablespoons of brown sugar to taste. Since I am not trained in the intricacies of the kitchen, can someone tell me what happened to the recipe? He also told me to change with the pulp from the AMT and fish sauce, but can not have a good understanding of how to work the 3 variables together.
